BMW Australia has pounced on the chance to add a diesel variant to its local X3 range, confirming the new six-cylinder turbo-diesel X3 40d xDrive variant will join the mid-size luxury SUV lineup Down Under later this year.

BMW announced that the 40d xDrive would join the global X3 range back in January, but at that time it was unclear whether the new variant would be sold in Australia.

Now confirmed for local showrooms, the BMW X3 40d xDrive will be priced at $108,900 before on-road costs, positioning it below the flagship M50 xDrive in a four-grade range. The 30e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and turbo-petrol 20 xDrive round out the local X3 offering.

Deliveries of the 40d xDrive will commence from the third quarter of 2025.

With the assistance of 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, the new 40d xDrive turbo-diesel produces a punchy 210kW of power and 670Nm of torque in Australian specification – up 15kW and 50Nm on the previous xDrive30d.

As a result, the xDrive 40d can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 5.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 245km/h.

As with other variants available in the Australian range, the xDrive 40d sends power to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. It consumes a claimed average of 6.7L/100km on the WLTP cycle.

Powertrain aside, specifications match those of the 30e xDrive, including standard fitment of the M Sport Package and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the fourth-generation X3 features a curved display housing a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system running BMW’s Android-based Operating System 9.

All Australian-spec X3s receive standard adaptive suspension, as well as adaptive LED headlights and an Iconic Glow illuminated double kidney grille.

BMW Australia has previously said that it plans to persist with diesel powertrains in its larger SUVs, while prioritising electric power for smaller models.

In 2024, a total of 369,842 diesel-powered passenger, SUV and light commercial vehicles were sold in Australia. This was down 2.5 per cent year-on-year.
