It feels like the current-generation BMW M5 only launched yesterday, yet the German manufacturer is already reportedly working on an update for its new super sedan.

Less than a year after the new G90 M5 was unveiled in June 2024, a heavily camouflaged example has been spotted testing in the snow, sporting revised exterior styling, both front and rear.

It’s understood BMW will apply its upcoming Neue Klasse design language to the facelifted M5, with the camouflaged tester wearing squarer headlights, split lower intake, and chunkier side air curtains.

The famous BMW kidney grille has also been downsized. Two slim rectangular sections replace the square design of the current model.

At the rear, BMW has seemingly done away with the old diffuser design in favour of a cleaner, squared off bumper look.

It’s unclear whether the taillights have also been changed, as the housing is mostly hidden by camouflage.

As a package, the spied test vehicle shares striking similarities with the upcoming BMW i3, the BMW 3 Series’ electric sibling. That, in turn, is almost identical in shape to the Vision Neue Klasse concept from September 2023.

Previous reports suggest that the i3 will enter production in late 2026.

Bimmerpost forum user ynguldyn, who claims to compile information from sources within BMW, has previously slated the updated M5 to start production in March 2027.

The G90 M5 is currently available in both sedan and wagon form. Under the bonnet sits a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, supplemented by an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Total system outputs tally 535kW and 1000Nm, making the G90 the most powerful M5 ever.

Drive is sent to all four wheels, and BMW claims the M5 can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds despite its inflated weight – 2435kg, a 540kg gain compared to the previous-gen M5 Competition.

BMW claims the first PHEV M5 can drive up to 69km on electric power, courtesy of the 18.6kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
